A whole Website is not enough to get to know a person, right? I get it. I would feel the same way, lucky for you I am a big oversharer. So, let's start, from the beginning! I was born in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, the 4th biggest state in Brazil. All my family is from Brazil, and until very recently they all lived there.
But to make this long story short, I will jump to when my life intertwined with Theatre. When I was about 7 years old my mother took me and my sister to watch a show, not only made for kids but also acted by kids. It was the end-of-year showcase of a friend's theatre class. I still vividly remember that performance, I remember how amazed I was by my sister's friend, who was so young and yet was there taking up that immense stage. Immediately after, I asked my mom to sign me up for classes and I guess my enthusiasm also encouraged my sister, so a semester later, it was us at that stage.
That was probably one of the most terrifying moments of my life. Then a few years passed and it was suddenly not terrifying anymore. My sister eventually grew out of it, but I got stuck. I was so stuck that when all my friends started considering which majors they would pursue in college, all I could think of was how much I didn't want to stop acting. I didn't want to stop living and breathing Theatre.
At that time I started imagining what my life would be like if I decided to stay in my city and pursue Theatre there. It was definitely discouraging. Even though my city is very bohemian and artistic, there isn't much Theatre there. This may seem like an exaggeration, but technical theatre was not even a thing. Now you must be thinking: hold on, what?? Well, yes, it is true. There wasn't a scenic designer, a head carpenter, or a prop master for each production I've ever made. And yes, you guessed right, there was also no Stage Management. And before you try to check fact me, I am not talking about any production that is made there. Of course in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where big productions are made, they sure have all those things. But for any other "off off Broadway-Brazil" theatre it all falls under the director.
I knew I had to move to another country to explore this art form in the way that it deserved. I then decided to come to the US and started working toward satisfying all application requirements. It was a lot... And with all that, there was barely time left to consider if that was what I really wanted. But I guess we can't wonder too much, because in reality there is no answer to that question.
After 3 years of living in the US, a lot has changed. I moved cities, a world pandemic happened, I met a lot of people, I started a double major in Theatre and Public Relations, and I found out about the world of Technical Theatre.
A few years ago I started working as a Stage Manager, and even though my passion for performance did not fade away, I found a new field in Theatre that I am also passionate about.
So more to come in the next chapters!
